Climate change presents New York City with significant challenges to adapt infrastructure, livelihoods and maintain a quality of life that makes it one of the great world capitals. This session will provide background on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s commitment to reduce New York City’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80% from 2005 levels by 2050 (80 x 50) - the level that the United Nations projects is necessary to avert the most disastrous impacts of climate change.

To accelerate reductions in GHG emissions from buildings, the City launched the NYC Carbon Challenge—a groundbreaking public-private partnership between the City and private and institutional sector organizations who have committed to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent or more over the course of ten years. The program—launched in 2007—now includes over 100 participants that are universities, hospitals, commercial firms and owners, multifamily buildings, and hotels who have pledged to reduce their building-based emissions by 30 percent or more over the course of ten years.

In this session, Patrick will provide more information on the program’s progress as well as case studies detailing the technical and organizational strategies that participants have implemented to save money and achieve deep reductions in their greenhouse gas emissions.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the city’s climate commitments and the policy/programmatic framework developed by the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability to achieve these goals
2. Identify NYC Carbon Challenge program structure and benefits as well as participation options
3. Learn from participant case studies about successful participants who have realized increased cost-savings and deep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
