Better Steam Heat: Making New York City’s Steam Heating Systems More Reliable and Reducing Emissions

Better Steam Heat: Making New York City’s Steam Heating Systems More Reliable and Reducing Emissions

In New York City buildings, the heating season often means over- and under-heated apartments, banging pipes and radiators, and residents being forced to open their windows to cool off. These common problems with steam heating systems can be solved with relatively simple measures that save money and help the City reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Heating systems can account for as much as half of the energy used in a typical large building. Smart steam heating system adjustments can save a building $10,000 to $30,000 a year on energy costs. The City is focused on steam heating systems because they are the most common heating system in large buildings in NYC – 70 percent of large buildings over 50,000 square feet use steam distribution systems to heat the building – and they tend to be legacy systems that are often not well-maintained. This presentation will highlight the assistance provided by the NYC Retrofit Accelerator, a program launched by the NYC Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, to help building owners and decision-makers improve the reliability of their steam heating systems and reduce energy costs—without having to replace the boiler system! The NYC Retrofit Accelerator offers free, personalized advisory services that streamline the process of making energy efficiency improvements in buildings that will reduce operating costs, enhance tenant comfort, and improve our environment.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand common problems with steam heating systems and how to make upgrades that save money, improve resident comfort, and reduce GHG emissions.
2. Learn why upgrading steam heating system matters to building decision-makers, building residents, and New York City.
3. Understand how the Retrofit Accelerator’s team of Efficiency Advisors  can help building owners and decision-makers upgrade their steam heating systems.
4. Learn how to get started on a steam heating system upgrade today.
